Selecting the proper acrylic thickness is one of the key decisions for custom retail display stands. Too thin, and the rack will wobble, bend or break easily. Too thick, and you waste budget on unnecessary material cost, and the display will look bulky and heavy.
The ideal thickness depends on the stand size, the weight of the products you plan to place, and your desired visual style. Below is a practical buyer’s reference for common acrylic display projects.
Recommended Thickness by Use Case
- Small tabletop display (under 20cm): 3mm / 4.5mm Great for jewelry, small cosmetics, earbuds, sample bottles. Lightweight, delicate look. Best for items with low weight.
- Medium product stand (20–40cm): 6mm Most common option for cosmetic sets, perfume, eyewear and small electronics displays. Balances rigidity and clean slim appearance. This is the most popular choice for brand retail POP displays.
- Large or heavy-duty display (over 40cm, holding heavy goods): 8mm –12mm For multi-tier large racks, wine display, heavy product trays. 8mm is standard; 10–12mm for extra stability when loading heavy items.
Note: Vertical tall panels need thicker acrylic than horizontal shelves of the same size. Tall thin acrylic panels bend easily under its own weight.
Common Mistakes Buyers Make
Over-specifying thickness
Many buyers choose 10mm for tiny jewelry stands. It looks chunky and greatly increases sheet material cost without any real benefit.
Choosing thickness only by visual preference, ignoring load
A tall multi-layer stand made with 4.5mm acrylic will flex and deform, especially during shipping. You may receive a sample that looks fine, but mass production units will have stability issues.
Ignoring assembly structure
If your design uses supporting brackets, you can use slightly thinner acrylic. If the structure is fully self-supporting without extra reinforcement, you need to upgrade the thickness.
How to Balance Cost and Performance
- Differentiate thickness on different parts of one display. Use thicker acrylic for load-bearing shelves, thinner acrylic for decorative back panels.
- Ask your supplier for suggestions based on your product weight and drawing.
- Request a physical sample to test stability before bulk order, especially for large custom racks.
Quick Selection Summary
For most branded retail acrylic displays, 6mm cast acrylic is the sweet spot. For small lightweight products, go with 3–4.5mm. For large multi-tier or heavy load projects, select 8mm or thicker.
