Custom acrylic displays require careful craftsmanship. Even minor flaws like scratches, bubbles or poor polishing can ruin your brand presentation in retail stores. Understanding typical acrylic defects helps you set clear QC standards, reduce disputes and avoid receiving defective goods after long ocean shipping.
1. Surface Scratches

Scratches are the most frequent issue. They may come from raw sheet handling, machining, assembly or insufficient protection during packaging.
· Risk: Light scratches are visible on transparent acrylic under retail lighting, greatly affecting premium brand display effect.
· Prevention: Keep protective film on acrylic during all production steps. Only peel off the film for final inspection. Add foam separators between each piece. Clearly mark scratch tolerance in your PI.
2. Bubbles & Impurities inside the sheet

Bubbles or tiny black spots usually come from low-grade acrylic raw material or improper casting.
· Risk: Cannot be fixed after cutting. Bubbles inside the sheet will permanently ruin the appearance.
· Prevention: Confirm cast acrylic material certificate at quotation stage. Inspect samples under bright white light before bulk order.
3. Poor Edge Polishing

Two common polishing types: flame polishing and diamond polishing. Flame polishing may leave yellow, wavy or uneven edges. Diamond polishing delivers crystal clear edges for high-end displays.
· Risk: Yellow edges look cheap and unprofessional for luxury brand projects.
· Prevention: Specify diamond polishing on drawings if your project requires high transparency. Check edge quality on pre-production sample.
4. Dimension & Assembly Tolerance Errors

Multi-piece acrylic stands rely on precise cutting and notching. Small dimension deviations can make parts unable to fit together.
· Risk: Products cannot be assembled at your warehouse after receiving.
· Prevention: Define tolerance range in advance, normally ±0.2~0.5mm for display racks. Test assembly of the pre-production sample completely.
5. Glue Marks & Glue Bleed

Acrylic bonding may leave white glue traces on the surface if glue amount or operation is not well controlled.
· Risk: Glue marks are hard to clean and very obvious on transparent acrylic.
· Prevention: Ask supplier to hide glue joints on non-visible sides. Check bonded areas carefully during sample approval.
6. Breakage During Shipment

Acrylic is brittle. Even good-quality items can crack if packed poorly for sea freight.
· Risk: Cracked goods mean lost time and extra re-production cost.
· Prevention: Individual foam wrapping + hard export cartons. Add wooden cases for large or heavy acrylic displays.

QC Inspection Checklist for Your Acrylic Order
1. Check all surfaces for scratches after partial film removal
2. Inspect sheet interior for bubbles, dust and impurities
3. Examine edge finish: no yellowing, waves or rough cuts
4. Test assembly of all components
5. Verify dimensions against your drawing
6. Check glue joints for excess glue and white marks
7. Confirm packaging method for ocean transport
Final Tips
Quality control starts at the sample stage. Never approve mass production before confirming a physical sample matches all your requirements. Write all QC standards clearly in the proforma invoice, so both sides have the same quality expectation.
